  1. Skeletal and Muscular Systems

    • The skeletal system is comprised of 206 bones. These bones function to lend support to the body and to protect vital organs. The role of protection falls primarily to the rib cage--inside of it is where the most vital organs, the heart and lungs are located. The skull also acts to protect the brain from injury.

The muscular system acts with the skeletal system to enable the body to move. There are three basic types of muscles: skeletal, smooth and cardiac. The smooth muscles function without our conscious control, like the muscles of the stomach and intestines.

    Cardiac and Respiratory Systems

    • Cardiac or heart muscle is a different type of muscle all its own. The heart pumps blood through the body through blood vessels. The heart has an internal electrical system that fires, causing the muscles to contract and forcing blood into the blood vessels. There are two types of blood vessels: arteries and veins. Arteries carry blood away from the heart; veins carry blood toward the heart.

Without the lungs, the heart couldn't do its part. The lungs, along with the diaphragm, make up the respiratory system. When the diaphragm contracts, the lungs expand, filling with air. Air comes in through the nose and mouth into the trachea and into the bronchial tubes where it then goes into the lungs and into the alveoli or air sacs. In the alveoli, gaseous exchange takes place. This is where oxygen seeps into the blood and carbon dioxide is taken back out of the blood and released back out of the body through exhalation.

    Digestive and Excretory Systems

    • As the circulatory and respiratory systems work to provide one type of fuel (oxygen) for the body, the digestive system provides another type of fuel. The digestive system breaks down food for the body to use. It starts with the mouth, as chewing is the first step in digestion. Then, when you swallow, food passes through the esophagus into the stomach where the next phase of digestion begins. The stomach breaks down food by churning and acids. Digested food is absorbed from the stomach into the intestines. Waste product is passed out through the anus.

Food products that cannot be broken down and absorbed by the body are processed out of the body. This process is handled by the excretory system, which is composed of the kidneys and bladder. The kidneys act to filter the blood. Impurities removed from the blood are stored in the bladder, and, when the bladder is full, these impurities are passed out of the body as urine.

    The Reproductive System

    • The reproductive system allows the human species to carry on after one generation is gone. Through the reproductive system, we are able to procreate and have children. The male and female reproductive systems are different from one another, yet complementary to one another. Men produce sperm while women, through their ovaries, produce eggs. Women are also equipped with a womb, which allows them to carry a baby inside them until it can survive in the outside world.

    The Integumentary and Immune Systems

    • The integumentary system, commonly called the skin, is a covering for the whole body. The skin has nerves that allow us to feel the world around us. The skin also acts to regulate body temperature and keep bacteria and other harmful microbes on the outside.

The immune system protects our bodies from foreign invaders. The immune system acts like an internal armed force to repel foreign invaders. The body has several defensive barriers that prevent foreign microbes from entering. But, for those that do get in, the body has a number of reactions to destroy or drive out the enemy

    The Nervous System

    • The nervous system is comprised of the brain and spinal cord. The nervous system sends signal from the brain out to the body coordinating both voluntary movement and the many automatic functions that go on without or conscious effort. The nervous system also feeds information back to the brain in the form of stimuli from our five senses.

    The Endocrine System

    • The endocrine system is made up of the pituitary and thyroid glands along with the gonads and other glands. The endocrine system functions to secrete up to 20 different hormones that aid in everything from reproduction to cell repair to digestion.

There are 11 unique body systems that work together to keep the body functioning.
These are the muscular, skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, excretory, reproductive, endocrine, immune, integumentary and nervous systems.
